Strategies to Address Housing Challenges and Homelessness

Wednesday 9th November 2022
Speakers' Hall, Queensland Parliament House, Brisbane.

On Wednesday 9 November 2022, the Centre for Policy futures co-hosted a Queensland Future Conversations event with QUT and Griffith University on the topic of “Strategies to Address Housing Challenges and Homelessness.”

An increasing number of Queenslanders are not able to access adequate housing, as the recent Queensland Housing Summit illustrated. The consequences of not having a sufficient supply of affordable rental housing in the public, community and private market means many Queensland households are experiencing housing related poverty, insecure tenure and homelessness.

The event was moderated by Interim Chief Scientist Professor Bronwyn Harch, and opened with an address from The Honourable Leeanne Enoch MP, Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts.

Leading experts from each university were then invited to discuss short-, medium- and long-term strategies to address these interconnected challenges. From Griffith University, Associate Professor Sacha Reid presented on “Developing a social and affordable housing investment tool” whilst Professor Rebekah Russell-Bennett explored the positive ramifications of screening mature women at risk of homelessness through the case study “The Women’s Butterfly Project.” Professor Cameron Parsell from UQ closed the presentations by addressing the evidenced-based knowledge we already have in “Queensland has the knowledge to end homelessness, does it have the will?”

The speakers were then joined for a Q&A style panel by three other experts- Professor Paul Burton (Griffith University), Associate Professor Maree Petersen (UQ), and Professor Melissa Bull (QUT).
