Dr Cameron Allen

Researcher biography
Dr Cameron Allen is an interdisciplinary scientist and a Senior Research Fellow and ARC DECRA Fellow at the Sustainability Transitions Lab in the Faculty of Business and Economics.
His research addresses how sustainability transitions can be deliberately guided and accelerated through coordinated technological, social, and institutional change. Working at the intersection of sustainability policy and governance, transition pathways, and systems modelling, he analyses how change unfolds in practice and how it can be shaped through policy and broader socio-political conditions. By integrating modelling with socio-technical analysis, he generates actionable insights on policy trade-offs, co-benefits, and pathways towards low-carbon, circular economies and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Cameron has produced an influential body of work in the interdisciplinary sustainability sciences, with publications in leading journals including Nature, Science, Nature Sustainability, Nature Communications, Nature Food, and One Earth. He has extensive experience working with governments and United Nations organisations across multiple regions including the Asia-Pacific, co-designing research projects and translating complex systems insights into policy-relevant strategies.
He is the recipient of several prestigious Australian Research Council awards as well projects commissioned by governments, the UN, and philanthropy - securing over $2.5 million in research funding since 2020. He leads major science-policy initiatives including the Transforming Australia project and the global Post-2030 Initiative. His work forms a coherent and growing research program on sustainability policy, transition pathways, and modelling, aimed at supporting governments in designing and implementing effective, evidence-based strategies for systems transformation.
His qualifications include a PhD and MPhil in sustainable development, a Master of Environmental Management, a Bachelor of Science, and a Bachelor of Business and Economics.
