Project title: The Role of Law in Standardization of Synthetic Biology
Supervisors: Professor Brad Sherman, Associate Professor Allison Fish
Synthetic biology integrates various disciplines, among which the effective operation of standards is particularly important to have interoperability, reproducibility, safety and scaling up. To achieve that, standards need to be readily available, easily accessible, reproducible, transparent, and transmittible. Intellectual property has the potential to hinder the effective operation of technical standards. My research looks into legal mechanisms to protect standards and ensure they function properly. These mechanisms can be applied to synthetic biology and biomanufacturing standardization processes to address similar normative concerns and contribute to a more sustainable and flourishing future globally.
