Prior to September 2021, the Coalition had a largely positive scorecard on Southeast Asia relations. But the announcement of Australia’s security deal with the United Kingdom and the United States (AUKUS) to acquire nuclear-powered submarines caused a serious rupture in our relations with Southeast Asia.
