About Cybersecurity & Cyberwarfare presented by Major General Marcus Thompson AM

The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, in cooperation with The University of Queensland’s School of Information, Technology and Electrical Engineering, AusCERT and the Association of Old Crows, are pleased to invite you to attend a public lecture and panel session featuring Major General Marcus Thompson AM, Deputy Chief Information Warfare Division (IWD) with the Australian Defence Force.

“Information warfare” is a relatively new term in its modern incarnation. While information has always played a crucial part of warfare, the modern terminology associated with it is frequently linked to digital capabilities and, more specifically, to “cyber warfare.” The question of Australia’s strategic interests must lie at the heart of our discussion of information warfare and for Australia to have a coherent conversation about the role of information in modern warfare, we must define where “information” in the twenty-first century is situated across the normal spectrum of conflict. This gives rise to some key questions in relation to: Whether Australia has the right legislative frameworks to meet the threats of conflict in the information environment? Does the ADF’s force-structure reflect the true nature of the threat environment in the Information Age? Have we prepared the Australian public to understand the nature of war in the information environment?

After the Major General's lecture, a diverse panel of experts will discuss the ramifications for the Australian defence, government and business communities.
