Introduction to Participatory Futures Scenarios for Policy and Practice

Over two intensive days, you will:

• Build foundational knowledge in systems thinking, futures thinking and scenario planning
• Explore how participatory scenarios can bring diverse voices, including communities often absent from formal decision-making, into the policy process
• Practise co-creating future narratives using real-world tools and case studies from around the globe
• Translate collaboratively developed scenarios into polished policy outputs, including ministerial briefs and formal communications

This course directly addresses the OECD-identified skills gap in evidence-informed policymaking, with a distinctive focus on the interpersonal, relational, and communication capabilities that methodology-heavy programs often overlook.

What will you learn?

• Effectively frame research questions that support policy makers to understand future systems challenges and key drivers of change
• Apply future scenario methods for different problems and audiences, with focus on practical, participatory methods that are creative, inclusive and hopeful
• Intentionally build diverse stakeholder voices into policy design and help decision-makers engage meaningfully with civil society specifically
• Use narratives, visualisation and written communication to translate future scenarios into evidence-based policy actions and outputs
• Reflect on opportunities to apply futures thinking and participatory scenarios for influencing wider social change, empowerment and equity outcomes
