Science Policy in the 21st Century

Dr Julia Stamm, founder and director of SCIENCE LEADS, will introduce the Handbook of Science & Public Policy that she is currently co-editing and that is due to be published later this year with Edward Elgar Publishing.

The relationship between science and society has been changing in the last twenty years and continues to do so. In particular, the roles of science and innovation are being debated more explicitly. At the same time, there is increasing pressure to legitimise the amounts of public funding worldwide. And one questions is raised strongly: how does society benefit from science, and how can its impact be measured?

This changing relationship also challenges science policy. The handbook assembles the state of insights into the co-evolutionary and precarious relations between science and public policy. It looks at how science policy has changed over time and analyses the consequences for science and science systems nationally and internationally.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Julia Stamm is founder and director of SCIENCE LEADS, an independent consultancy based in Berlin, DE, and Brussels, BE, with a focus on science for policy and policy for science. Julia founded SCIENCE LEADS in 2016, after a career in European research management and science policy contexts. Among others, she held leadership positions at COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), the Berlin Social Science Research Centre (WZB) and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. In 2017, Julia managed the G20 Think Tank Summit "Global Solutions" that took place in Berlin and gathered the world's most renowned think tanks to provide policy advice to the G20 leaders.

Julia holds a Masters degree in Social Sciences from European University Viadrina (Frankfurt/Oder, Germany), a Certificat d’Etudes Politiques from Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Lille, France), a Doctorate of Philosophy from European University Viadrina (Frankfurt/Oder, Germany) and an Executive Master of Public Management from the Hertie School of Governance (Berlin, Germany).
