Parliamentary Briefing: Understanding Genomics in Healthcare

Tue 21 Aug 2018 7:30am

Australia is on the cusp of a healthcare revolution. Testing of individual genes (genetic testing) and more advanced testing of all 21,000 human genes (genomics) are big business that will lead to more personalised healthcare through improved diagnosis, targeted pharmaceuticals and tailored health treatment. The Queensland Government has committed $25m through the Queensland Genomics Health Alliance and the Federal Government has committed $500m over the next 10 years to advance genomics technology. This briefing will provide an overview of the existing technology and recent advances, and consider the ethical and social implications of making genetic data more readily accessible. Increased awareness of the developments and their implications for medical providers will lead to improved services for residents across Queensland.

Attendance is by invitation only.
