Join Justice Sarah Derrington, President of the Australian Law Reform Commission, and Justice David Jackson, Chair of the Queensland Law Reform Commission, for an interactive a panel discussion on law reform priorities with the potential to shape the future of Australian law.
This panel discussion progresses a new project initiated by the ALRC to seek the community’s views on the priorities for law reform in Australia. This panel event will focus on issues relating to energy, natural resources and the environment and follows other seminars across the country on the constitution, technology, immigration and public law.
There is concern that Australia’s environmental laws are outdated and fail to account for climate change. Some have suggested a complete overhaul of the legislative framework and its enforcement mechanisms is required. Industry groups have called for changes including streamlined environmental regulation, as well as clear and consistent obligations regarding biodiversity offsets and rehabilitation.
Expert speakers at this event will include Professor Karen Hussey, Director of the Centre for Policy Futures at the University of Queensland, Dr Russell Reichelt, former Chair of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Dr Justine Bell-James from the University of Queensland and Jonathan Fulcher from HopgoodGanim Lawyers.
The suggestions made at the event will inform the ALRC’s development of a proposed multi-year program of law reform inquiries which will be submitted to the Australian Attorney-General for his consideration.
